England hold-on for valiant draw

England

It was another draw that will feel like a victory, and we were reminded of England’s heroic last-wicket stand in the Ashes Test in Cardiff. This time is was Paul Collingwood and Graham Onions who had to survive the last few overs as the match finished in dramatic fashion.

Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott had appeared to put South Africa’s chance of victory as they ensured that England had 7 wickets remaining at tea.

However, Pietersen’s ridiculous run out was the start of a middle order collapse as on-by-one, England’s very able batsmen failed to stay at the crease, and it was left to Onions as the last man standing to save the game.

South Africa will be hugely disappointed at having failed to win the game, whilst Andrew Strauss’ England should have slightly higher spirits after escaping from the match without going 1-0 down in the series.

The 2nd Test starts on Boxing Day with the series still in the balance. Enjoy your Christmas, and we’ll regroup afterwards for more from South Africa.
