Player Profile: Ravi Bopara

After scoring a century in the Caribbean last month, Ravi Bopara now looks set to be thrust into the limelight as a crucial batsman, and is likely to play a prominent role in the Ashes series this year.

Ravi Bopara

Date of birth: 4th May 1985

Height: 5 ft 10 in

Teams represented: England, Essex, MCC, Kings XI Punjab

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm medium

He made his ODI debut in January 2007 and then featured in the Cricket World Cup and scored some crucial runs as a middle-order batsman, notably against Sri Lanka when his 52 off 53 balls almost secured an unlikely victory.

In December that year, Bopara made his Test debut in Sri Lanka, but failed to impress in the whites of the Test team as he had in the pyjamas of the One Day side. He was promptly dropped for the summer series, but reappeared again in August 2008 for the fourth Test against South Africa.

Bopara’s was much improved batting at six in the West Indies in early 2009, and now looks set to claim the number 3 role after Michael Vaughan, Ian Bell and Owais Shah.

In such a crucial position, Bopara could be the hero or the villain when the Australians arrive later this year.
