South Africa fight back on Day Two

South Africa took 7 wickets in England’s first innings as the day closed with the hosts leading by 50 runs.

The opening session was fast and furious as South Africa added just 12 runs to their overnight total for the loss of their last four wickets. Jimmy Anderson enjoyed figures for 5 for 63 as he cleaned up the opposition tail within the first hour of play.

But the wickets continued to fall when England reached the crease, with Andrew Strauss falling for 2. Alastair Cook batted well for his 65, but England could not build significant partnerships as a succession of talented batsmen played poorly and threw away their wickets.

The scores are likely to be relatively even after the first innings, which means this crucial third test will effectively be a one-innings affair with a draw looking highly unlikely.

Bring on Day Three and keep your fingers crossed that England last longer than South Africa did this morning.
