Umpire David Shepherd Dies aged 68

There has been extremely sad news in the world of cricket this week as former international umpire David Shepherd died of cancer aged 68.

David Shepherd

Shepherd was a legend of the game, presiding in 172 ODIs, including three successive World Cup finals, and 92 Tests between 1983 and 2005. However, it was his character on the field that gave him his renowned status.

He will always be close to players and spectators hearts with his cheerful approach to officiating. His eccentric superstition of ‘jigging’ when scores reached 111 or a multiple thereof is something that will be in cricket folklore for years to come.

In fact Shepherd once said: “Many people remember me as that rather fat umpire who at certain times during a match jumps around on one leg.” But of course he was so much more than this.

For the younger readers who may not have known of Shepherd’s playing career, he was also a true performer with the bat. He represented Gloucestershire in 282 first class matches over 14 years and scored 12 centuries.

For me personally, Shepherd is one of the characters of cricket I remember while growing up. He along with great friend and fellow umpire Dickie Bird are two of the biggest symbols of English cricket throughout the 90s.

His compatriot Bird also held Shepherd in high esteem, and he explained: “He was a fine umpire; we spent many happy hours together. He was a great man and a tremendous man to umpire with.”

R.I.P Shep, you are a legend in all of our eyes.
